I took my young son to CSM last weeek and offer the following for those thinking of going with children:

The well equipped mini-club is open 0900-1800, but it often looks shut because they have all gone off on an expedition to the beach or the pool. (Life jackets provided for those who can't swim, but the pool used is very shallow.) It is run by Milagros who speaks Italian, some French and enough English to deal with small children. I wish I could smile as well as she does. There is also a mini-disco with dressing up in costumes at 8.30pm some nights.

Plenty of variety of child-friendly food with reasonable opening hours, and there are clean lavatories within 30 seconds of pretty much eveywhere on the site, as well as on some of the coaches in the convoy to and from the airport. There's lots to see from the coach to keep up interest even after a flight: horse-drawn carts, oxen, pigs, goats, a working steam train, a mini-Tour Eifel, etc., but the current timing of the return journey is grim for everyone but particularly for children (it changed from when I booked). 3 hours at Santa Clara airport, and another 1.5 at Ciego de Avila is tough.
Apple juice is available at "los Flamencos", and tomato ketchup at all restaurants. There's no menu displayed at the snack bar on the beach, but hot dogs, hamburgers and fries are available from the kitchen behind closed doors as well as the real food from the salad buffet and barbeque.
There's some construction still going on; enough to keep a small boy fascinated for hours.
There are children's bicycles, and hardly any traffic, but no cycle paths as such. There is a nature trail starting about 2km along the road. No horse riding.
I came across a couple of turtle nests on the beach, and some iguana trails on a nearby island. there are pelicans and humming birds, butterflies and dragon flies.
The catamaran trip is USD45 for children, and the depth of water at snorkelling stops was only around 2m. (I took a life jacket.)
Tennis courts also have basketball hoops.
There's an activities area open 7am to 6pm, with pool tables, chess, darts, ping-pong, etc.
A steam train trip is mentioned, but there are never enough takers (8) not least as it is surprisingly expensive.
The railings around the balcony of the rooms are widely spaced and would not satisfy Canadian standards; those with small children might want to be on the ground floor.
It certainly exceeded my expectations. For myself, I still prefer the un-animated ambiance of Capricho, but with young children CSM is impressive.

Thank you very much Mark for the detailed information!
We visited the mini-club and met Mila, the children seemed to LOVE her! We were also very impressed by all the equipement available at the mini-club.

When we left CSM, Mila was in the lobby saying goodbye to the children, we saw a couple of them who were holding her and crying because they wanted to stay with her! :-)
